In this photo, Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) Shirley Slade was 22 years old. WASP was a civilian women pilots’ organization, with trained pilots that worked for the US federal trade service by testing and ferrying aircrafts as well as training other pilots. This was done in order to free up male pilots to serve in combat roles during WWII.
