His Tragic Ending
Sadly, McQueen was diagnosed with lung cancer, which was caused by being exposed to asbestos. His condition declined rather quickly, and by 1980, the metastasis spread throughout the majority of his body. He didn’t give up, and sought out treatment. In October of 1980, he flew to Mexico against his doctors’ wishes in order to have an abdominal tumor removed. The surgery took 12 hours, but McQueen never recovered, suffering from heart failure from the stress of the procedure. He died at the clinic soon after.

McQueen died when he was 50 years old, which in the grand scheme is not old at all. While he lived a full life with a successful career, he still missed out on many things that life had to offer. He did not get to see his children grow older and continue to flourish his career. He posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June 1986.
