Growing Into It
As a younger actor, Sam was prone to play soldiers. He had the perfect stature, but his mustache and voice weren’t quite there yet. As he got older, however, he improved to playing army officers and men of higher stature. People started to recognize Sam in these growing roles, and it was fun for fans to see the actor evolve both on-screen and off. It was as though the soldier was becoming a man right before their very eyes.

Naturally, it was Sam’s physical characteristics that made him perfect for the army roles he was playing on-screen. However, the real man himself actually had some experience in the field! Sam Elliot actually spent some time at the California Air National Guard, and he credits a lot of his knowledge and skills in acting to his time there. Whenever Sam was up against other actors for the same role, this experience was very helpful to him getting the part.
