Rocky Beginnings
Things did not start easy for Katie and her new baby. At the time she adopted her son, she was also fostering a 14-month old child as well. Katie had experience caring for babies, but not for a newborn, so she had to learn quickly. To make matters even worse, the child’s birth mother had taken drugs during her pregnancy. Thankfully, the child did not show any signs of withdrawal, and the effects of the drugs would have no lasting effects.
Unfortunate Effects
Katie’s son was fortunate that the drugs his birth mother took while pregnant did not have any lasting effects. Sadly, babies born to drug addicts often have congenital disabilities caused by drugs and can even be born addicted to drugs. Common congenital disabilities include a cleft palate, malformed skull, and malformed or underdeveloped limbs. The withdrawals also cause babies to suffer greatly and can cause a predisposition for addiction later in life.
