McKayla started competing back in 2009 and finished third in the junior vault competition of the Dallas Visa Championships. Then, she got second place in the 2010 CoverGirl Classic, reaching first place at the Visa Championships that same year.

During the Pan American Championships in 2010, McKayla won gold for the vault and floor routines. Clearly, she could be a contender for the Olympic games that were right around the corner in 2012. She knew she had to keep practicing!
